Public Schools
Durham Public Schools are a unified county-wide system with 27,000 students and
4,000 employees, Durham’s Public School system is the sixth largest system in
the state. A massive $200-million capital improvements program in recent years
replaced or renovated 31 of the 43 schools with state-of-the-art facilities.
Durham makes progressive use of model, magnet and year-round schools.
Each school in the Durham Public School system offers a comprehensive
instructional program and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges
and Schools. The district also offers a broad range of innovative programs. The
new administrative leadership team is focused on making every school a model of
instructional excellence by the year 2000.
