Chapel
Hill
Home of the University of North Carolina
From returning students to retiring business professionals, Chapel Hill is a
college town where uptown and downtown merge comfortably to create a vibrant and
vital atmosphere. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC),
authorized by the state constitution in 1776, was chartered in 1789. The charter
specified the University be centrally located. New Home Chapel, later renamed
Chapel Hill, where several colonial roads converged, was picked as the site. UNC
opened its doors on January 15, 1795, as the first state university in the
United States. Today the campus joins downtown Chapel Hill along shop-lined
Franklin Street where students and residents come to stroll or to sit on stone
walls and watch the world go by. Dressed in its finest in the spring, the easy
rolling dogwood and azalea-studded city looks every bit of heaven when in bloom.
In the fall, the rich gold and brown of falling leaves decorate the campus
walkways. Both the town and the university provide a wide range of entertainment
and cultural activities from bluegrass bands to string quartets, light comedy to
serious drama. With more than 43,000 residents, it is a place of sophistication
without the stuffiness.
